William Hume and the sinking of HMS Hawke

William Hume was the first Goldhanger man to lose his life in the Great War.

On 15th October 1914 he was serving on HMS Hawke in the North Sea when it was sunk by a German submarine.

here are some images of that event...

amongst those lost on the ship were 4 sixteen year old boys from the Colchester area

to commemorate this a 96 page book was produced for the 100th anniversary in 2014 entitled:

“The Sinking of HMS Hawke”

a PDF version is available here...   https://www.merseamuseum.org.uk/MMPDFs/HMS%20HAWKE.pdf

William Hume is indentified in the book on page-50

In 2019 Stephen Robert Kuta created a webpage about Isaac William Hume as he was a relative.

If printed the document would be about 14-pages in length.   It describes...

the village of Goldhanger,    local Census returns,    his earlier RN career 1887-1909,    re-enlisting in 1914,

a history of HMS Hawke,    newspaper reports of the sinking,    the Goldhanger War Memorial,

plus a copy of William’s Royal Navy record

it is available here...    https://thelivesofmyancestors.wordpress.com/2019/02/12/isaac-william-hume-of-h-m-s-hawke/
