William Hume and the sinking of HMS Hawke
William Hume was the first Goldhanger man to
lose his life in the Great War.
On 15th October 1914 he was serving on HMS
Hawke in the North Sea when it was sunk by a German submarine.

amongst those lost on the ship were 4 sixteen
year old boys from the Colchester area
to commemorate this a 96 page book was
produced for the 100th anniversary in 2014 entitled:
