Societies and Clubs from the past

In the days when travelling to Maldon and elsewhere was difficult, and there were no radios or televisions, local entertainment was much more significant and there were many more local societies, clubs committees and interest groups in the village. Below are the 55 groups that have been identified from documents and newspaper reports in the local archives that are known to have existed at some time over the last few centuries. Of those, 17 are still in operation during 2017. In many cases the precise dates when they were formed and dissolved aren’t known. They are listed here in both alphabetic and chronological order using the earliest known dates. “Goldhanger” has been omitted from the titles.
