Jacob Mickelfield, or Micklefield was a
clockmaker who lived and worked in The Square at Goldhanger in the
mid 1700s. His name is spelt both ways on his clocks and on documents seen
relating to him. Today the house is a listed building and shows on the
Electoral Role as No.2 Head Street, being the first house on the north side
of village square. The house is now called “The Clockmakers”... Mickelfield's house
is on the right (postcard from the early 1900s) After working in Goldhanger for over twenty
years he moved his business to Southminster, and clocks still survive with
both Goldhanger and Southminster engraved on the dials. The period of time he
worked in Southminster is not known. Here is a summary of dates taken from

Mickelfield 1766 - Jacob Micklefield cited in
apprenticeship indentures Goldhanger 1766 - Jacob Micklefield recorded in
taxation listing as a Goldhanger residence 1767 - Deeds of the property show Jacob
Mickelfield purchased the house for ₤134 1767 - Jacob Mickelfield,
"whitesmith", leased a property at Goldhanger for five shillings 1781 - Deeds of the property show Jacob
Mickelfield sold the house for ₤200 1782 - a land tax assessment for
Goldhanger paying 12s 10d as the owner 1789 - Jacob Mickelfield was a resident
of Southminster a taxation listing 1789 - Jacob Mickelfield aged nine, son
of the clockmaker, was buried in Southminster 1789 - Jacob Mickelfield was listed as a

Jacob Mickelfield would have contructed, re-built and repaired
many clocks in his working career. To date (2022) eleven have been

2002 Jacob Mickelfield, (Southminster, Essex)
- (18thc) - (circa 1740-1770) an interesting early to mid 18thc. English
Georgian brass longcase dial and movement. 11 inch square 30 hour single
hand, single piece dial and 'birdcaged' movement with single weight on a
chain. The dial is engraved Jacob Mickelfield, Soutminster(sic),
Essex. Squared dial with roman numerals, engraved leaf and berry decoration
to each corner, an engraved rural scene with the chapter ring depicting an
18thc. A rustic male in a rowing boat, his wife waving a stick before a
cottage, brass thirty hour movement verso, with bell, pendulum and weight.

For sale on Ebay May 2013 Antique superb mahogany case with a moon
phase dial, long case clock. The mahogany case has a long arched trunk door.
The attractive engraved silvered dial with birds in the spandrels and a moon
phase in the arch moon connected dial signed in the arch of the
dial: "Jacob Michelfield Coldhanger". The 8 day
striking movement is clean and seems to function with pressure in the two
great wheels. With weights winding key and pendulum. Location: Ivybridge,
